The PlayStation 3 has hosted some of the best looking first party games of this generation. Talented developers in studios like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Sony Santa Monica have put forth monumental efforts and pushed the hardware to its limits. Though with each passing year, it seemed that the developers seemed to get more and more out of the technology.
With the sequel to one of the best looking games of this generation on the way in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Naughty Dog is softening the blow for fans that are expecting the graphical leap that was seen between Uncharted 1 & 2. Naughty Dog’s Justin Richmond explained in a recent interview how the untapped power was used to make Among Thieves stand apart from it’s predecessor and how Uncharted 3 doesn’t have the same “gap”.
Richmond said: “Uncharted 3 isn’t just an incremental update,” said the developer. “We did change lots and lots of things – but graphically speaking, it’s not going to have the same gap as between Uncharted 1 & 2. It was never going to happen.” “That huge gap that you saw between Uncharted 1 & 2 is the kind of thing that really only happens once per generation… Uncharted 2 to 3 is still a jump, but it’s a narrower jump.”
The developer did say there are many techniques that can be used to get better results from their work, but that may have been the last generational leap we’ll see on the PlayStation 3 from Naughty Dog.
