We have some good news and some bad news for Sonic fans, as Sega is celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary by releasing lots of new info on the series’ future. There are two games set to release in the series this year, which are the 2D Sonic Mania and the previously code-named Project Sonic 2017. Both are still on track to release this year, but one has been delayed.
The one that has been delayed is the one we know a lot more about, which is Sonic Mania. Sega revealed that the game will be missing its Spring release and has now been pushed back to a Summer release. They did not share a new release date for the game, though they did reveal new enemies and announced that Flying Battery Zone has made a return.
As for the good news, Sega revealed that Project Sonic 2017’s official title is Sonic Forces. The game runs on the brand new Hedgehog Engine 2 and is still set to launch this year, with some concept art for the game being released that is featured at the top of this post. New gameplay was also revealed that hasn’t been officially posted online yet, but so far it definitely seems to be shaping up nicely.
While the delay for Sonic Mania is a bummer, it’s good to know that they’re taking the time to make it the best it can be and the gameplay we’ve seen so far definitely looks like a great return to the classic roots. As for Sonic Forces, it would be fantastic if we can finally get a 3D Sonic game that is actually good after countless entries of mediocrity. Everything’s looking pretty good so far, with the brief gameplay clip shown during Sega’s SXSW panel looking fast and action packed.
Sonic Mania will launch this Summer and Sonic Forces will launch in the fourth quarter of this year. Both games will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
