Hyrule Warriors Legends officially releases today for the 3DS as a port of the Wii U title. As you can see in our review, we thought the game was an excellent version of Hyrule Warriors in portable form, complete with new content. However, while the game is available for all 3DS systems, it definitely doesn’t perform as well on every model.
Nintendo released the New Nintendo 3DS last February alongside the release of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D. That game was not exclusive to that model and worked just fine on the others. Then in April came the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which was the first actual exclusive for the New Nintendo 3DS.
Now, the system is the only one to get Super Nintendo VC games of the 3DS versions, so there definitely is a processor difference that comes into play, which is why Hyrule Warriors Legends is nearly unplayable on the non-New Nintendo 3DS models.
On the New Nintendo 3DS, Hyrule Warriors Legends performs very well with fluid and fast paced action that is very impressive for a handheld, though obviously the graphics took a bit of a hit from the console version. The only disappointment is that battles can feel a little sluggish if you have the 3D turned on here.
Where it is a major problem is with any other 3DS model, including the 2DS, where Hyrule Warriors Legends almost slows to a halt with very poor frame rate. It is still possible to be played, but it can really ruin your experience if you’re looking for the fast console like experience with Hyrule Warriors.
As a result of this, it is recommended that you only get this game if you have the newest console. If you were on the fence about getting one, the aforementioned exclusives and a game like this really do make it worth your while.
