The PlayStation 3 console will get a new target demographic according to Sony. Jim Ryan of SCEE told the Official PlayStation Magazine that the PlayStation 3 console will be geared towards a more “family market”. Ryan compares this most recent console cycle to previous cycles for the PlayStation family, and sees a disparity in where the PlayStation 3 is now and where previous consoles were in terms of price.
“If you look back at the history on PS1/PS2, the vast majority of the business that we did on both those platforms was done at sub $129 price points.” With the point being that at that price point, purchasing the PS3 becomes much more viable for many different consumers than just the “core” gaming audience.
However, Ryan did say that “The core gamer will absolutely not be neglected… There’s going to be tons and tons of great stuff for the core gamer from our own studios, third parties.” While the PlayStation faithful can rest easy that they won’t be neglected, Sony will likely be pushing forward with the PlayStation Move in it’s 2012 marketing strategies.
