Phil Spencer Says He Feels VR Is Mostly Demos & Experiments Right Now

VR is definitely just getting started with the release of Oculus Rift and Vive earlier this year, and more recently PlayStation VR last month. While Sony is really pushing this new technology with their PS4, the Xbox One is staying away from VR for now and Xbox’s Phil Spencer had some interesting comments about the state of VR thus far.

Spencer spoke with Stevivor about the topic of VR, where he revealed he has used it a good bit, including owning an Oculus Rift and an HTC Vive, and having used PSVR as well.

When asked if Xbox would be looking to bring VR to Xbox One, or more specifically the Scorpio next year, Spencer revealed that they are looking into the potential of VR with Scorpio, but aren’t sure when they would feel comfortable with it.

“I think VR will find its spot in gaming; I would make that bet. We designed Scorpio as a VR-capable console. Whether that happens this year, next year or the year after… like I said, I still think the creative community has to get its arms around what are these new tools, and this new feeling — this new immersion.

What experiences do you put in people’s hands to have a long term engagement? Most of these things I’m playing now feel like demos and experiments, which I actually think it’s absolutely the right thing to have happened. That’s not a criticism at all, but should be happening. But I think it will take time.”

Spencer definitely has a point, with many of the launch titles for PSVR providing either very short or limited experiences that are built to showcase the technology. Hopefully we’ll see the technology find success and grow to the point that Spencer feels is right for Xbox One and Scorpio.
