VR gaming finally hit the point many have been waiting for last year with the release of three distinct headsets, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. We started off this year with a major release embracing the technology with Resident Evil 7 being fully playable, but most of the games being released are standalone VR titles. It doesn’t appear that Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-man game will have any VR support that we know of, but Marvel Games sounds like they are quite interested in exploring the idea of it in the future.
In an interview with GameSpot, Marvel Games’ Jay Ong was discussing Marvel Games and upcoming titles. During this session, he was asked about if he thought VR had potential, in which he said:
“Absolutely. In fact, we did a deep dive in looking at the space towards the end of last year, and it offers some pretty incredible opportunities, in terms of delivering really cool experiences. We can’t say anything yet, but believe me, we’re not shying away from it.”
Ong obviously didn’t give any details, but he did tease some information could be coming in the near future after being asked when we might here more about Marvel Games and VR by saying “soon.” He then continued by saying “There are absolutely things in the works, but we’re just not quite ready to announce them yet.”
This could easily just mean that Marvel Games is looking at some small VR experiences that they could sell from within the Marvel universe. Just imagine being able to swing around New York City as Spider-Man in a simulator, even if it’s not a full game. I know that’s something I’d pay for. However, if they could manage to implement this in a major game release in some capacity as well, that would be even better.
