After originally launching in September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, GTA V has now become available on almost all major gaming platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. Of course, the game has sold a ton of copies, but just how many is a bit staggering. As announced today by Take 2 Games, GTA V has sold a total of nearly 52 million copies across all platforms, making it easily one of the best selling games of all time. Just as a note, these figures are not sold to customers, instead representing sales to retailers. However, it is still a massive accomplishment, and represents the number of copies expected to sell within the next few months.
Grand Theft Auto V has now sold-in nearly 52 million units across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.
Unfortunately we don’t have any breakdown for how these monstrous sales split up across the five platforms. We do know that the PC versions recently crossed the two million unit mark after only being available for a few weeks. This leaves about 50 million split across PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The older generation probably accounts for the majority of this number, mostly due to it releasing first and having a larger install base of customers. Of course, another question is, how many people double or even triple dipped on releases as GTA V slowly made its way across more and more powerful gaming systems.
Many who purchased the game on PS3 or Xbox 360 were quick to buy it again on PS4 and Xbox One, while other waited for the PC release that hit last month. This would explain how it sold double what GTA IV did, but should really only prove the game’s staying power given the fact that players still were willing to buy the game again.
