Battlefield 3’s creators, DICE, aren’t just crossing their fingers and hoping that more people buy their game than ever before thankfully. The development studio has made some conscious gameplay design decisions to try and lure in more types of players to play their upcoming shooter. Lars Gustavson of DICE reveals in a recent interview some of the faults that the development team had in their mindset, and the team’s conscious effort to “reverse that mentality”. Gustavson claims that DICE pretty much had the mentality of “Play the game our way, or play something else”.
In Battlefield 3, Gustavson claims that the team at DICE has consciously implemented core changes to the game to incorporate a much larger variety of gameplay experiences which should be more inviting to all walks of players. The team has focused on offering a wide variety of gamemodes, these range from the wide open battlefields that have been the franchise’s staple for years, but have also incorporated tighter gameplay offerings in smaller, “grittier”, urban environments. The developer believes that ‘Combining these two elements and adding destruction is something noone else is capable of.’
Gustavson noted that DICE is very proud of their trademark gamemodes like Rush and Conquest but as a whole, the team felt that there needed to be more offerings in order to appeal to more players.
